About Radiography
Radiographers perform a variety of radiographic (x-ray) examinations on virtually every organ or body region utilizing radiographic equipment, films, cassettes, film processors and computers. The radiographer comes in contact with patients of all ages and various levels of health ranging from the patient requiring a routine check-up to the severely injured trauma patient. The radiographer must meet the healthcare needs of the patient while providing them with excellent service to meet the physician's diagnostic needs. Radiographers also have the opportunity to expand their careers through additional education and clinical experience in subspecialty areas such as nuclear medicine, diagnostic medical sonography, angiography, mammography, radiation therapy, computerized axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The radiographer is an integral part of the healthcare team utilizing skills, talents and education to meet the patient's needs in an efficient and professional manner.

Program Description
The Radiography Program is designed to educate students in the science of radiography. It is an academic and clinical curriculum encompassing full- or part-time study. Students are instructed in the classroom and at multiple clinical facilities. Upon completion of the program, graduates are awarded an associate in applied science degree and are eligible to take the radiography registry examination.

Mission
The Radiography program provides the community with educated, registry-eligible, professionally competent, entry-level radiographers. The program provides the student with didactic learning activities in general studies and radiographic studies, as well as clinical learning and application experiences validated by clinical competency processes and standards.

Educational Outcomes
Upon completion of the curriculum, the graduates will:

  • Function as competent entry-level professionals that meet the healthcare needs of the community.
  • Exhibit respect and empathy to each individual within a diverse population when in the clinical setting.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional ethics, attitudes and behaviors and to continuing professional development.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge and critical thinking to professional practice.
Clinical Facilities
The diagnostic imaging department settings at Lancaster General and Memorial Hospital in York offer a wide range of clinical opportunities for radiography students. These clinical locations offer clinical experiences in fluoroscopy, general radiography, urography, mobile and operating room radiography. In addition to these diagnostic areas, the students may rotate through specialized imaging and therapeutic facilities including: computerized axial scanning tomography, radiation therapy, diagnostic medical sonography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging and various satellite facilities.

Program-Specific Pregnancy Policy
If a student becomes pregnant while attending the program, it is the student's option as to whether or not to inform the Coordinator or other faculty member(s) of her pregnancy. If the student elects to inform the Coordinator or faculty member(s), she must do so in writing. In the absence of any voluntary disclosure of pregnancy, students are not considered to be pregnant.

If a student informs the Coordinator, in writing, that she is pregnant, a conference will be held with the Coordinator, a qualified medical physicist and the student to review a clinical schedule that the student will follow during her pregnancy.

The Radiation Dosimetry Report of all students within the program is reviewed by a qualified clinical site/hospital physicist and the Program Coordinator.

The program is committed to maintaining a high quality of academic and clinical integrity for the pregnant student. The pregnant student will not be placed at an academic or clinical disadvantage due to pregnancy. The clinical and academic competency level of the pregnant student will be assessed upon her return to school. Clinical and academic schedules will be altered to ensure the competency of students enrolled in and graduating from the program is maintained.
