PSY300 Health Psychology
Course Description: This course reviews the ways that behavior, mental states, culture, and physical health interact. The course examines factors that influence the practice of healthy and unhealthy behaviors (e.g. smoking, eating high fat diets, exercising). Finally, students will study and apply current theories regarding the promotion of healthy behaviors, and the prevention, experience and treatment of illness.
Course Outcomes: By the completion of the course, you will:
- Apply the theories of health psychology to clinical decision making and promotion of positive health behaviors.
- Assess the credibility of health information disseminated by the internet.
- Examine the cultural, social and psychological factors that affect health and disease.
- Analyze the roles of oppression, culture, economic status and social identities in health behavior and the access to and experience with health care.
- Develop a health promotion intervention program.
Prerequisite: Any college-level psychology course.
