New Leader Orientation
 
The purpose of the New Leader Orientation is to create a consistent approach to orienting new leaders. Lancaster General Health employees who are new to a leadership role, as well as novice or experienced leaders who recently joined LGH, receive a certificate of attendance after successful completion of 8 modules as described below. Participants choose one session date and time from each module with no particular order required.

MODULE 1
 
Organizational Overview
This module provides information about how the Lancaster General Health (LGH) organization is structured and the range of services offered by LG entities.
 
Objectives:
  • Articulate the vision for LGH leadership and the role a leader plays in the system.
  • Increase knowledge of the LGH organizational structure (service lines, different entities and committee structures).
  • Learn about the LGH annual goals. 
MODULE 2
 
Creating an Extraordinary Experience @ LGH
This module provides participants with an introduction to the Experience Design Model as the basis for transforming Lancaster General’s patient and family experience from a service model to an experience model.
 
Objectives:
  • Define an experience economy and why is it important in Healthcare.
  • Discuss strategies for operationalizing @ LGH.

MODULE 3
 
Human Capital Management
This module provides participants with an overview of the LGH Human Resource function at LGH.
 
Objectives:
  • Introduce participants to the structure of the Human Resource function at LGH.
  • Provide an overview to the major components of Employee Management.
  • Participants are provided with information and resources regarding the Employee Management function. 
MODULE 4
 
Computer Skills for Managers
This module provides participants with an overview of the essential computer applications needed at the management level.
 
Objectives:
  • Use the Intranet to find help for computer applications.
  • List at least three computer applications used as a manager.
  • Adhere to LGH IS Security guidelines and communicate guidelines to staff. 
MODULE 5
 
Financial Education for the LGH Leader
This module provides participants with information on the overall fiscal strategies at LGH, as well as, the leader’s role in the fiscal performance area.
 
Objectives:
  • Learn about the annual financial goals of LGH.
  • Increase knowledge of the monthly financial / budget reports.
  • Brief overview of the budget process.
  • Articulate how LGH gets paid for its services.
  • Familiarize yourself with CDM and charge entry issues.
  • Learn the importance of registration and coding to the billing process.
MODULES 6 THROUGH 8
 
Choose 3 electives from the following programs:
 
Elective 1- Communication Skills to Build Effective Teams
This module provides information and skills on the basic communication competencies critical to improving performance and engaging team members.
 
Objectives:
  • Describe the channels of communication in your team.
  • Learn how to engage and motivate your team members.
  • Practice the skill of listening and communicating in conscious, healthy ways. 

Elective 2-  Introduction to Purchasing, Value Analysis and Contracting at LGH
This module provides participants with an overview of how the Materials Management/Purchasing functions operate.
 
Objectives:

  • Learn about the tools and processes available for the selection, acquisition and distribution of goods and services required throughout LGH.
  • Receive resources to enable access to, and participation in, business support services.
  • Increase awareness of supply chain strategies, issues and leveraged solutions available to support our service lines.
  • Gain knowledge of the Value Analysis and Cost Management processes of LGH. 

Elective 3:  Moving from Conflict to Collaboration
This module provides a model for the effective management of conflict — which will result in increased collaboration, innovation, problem solving, and productivity in the workplace.
 
Objectives:
  • Examine various approaches to conflict.
  • Learn a structured process for addressing conflict constructively.
  • Develop strategies to harness the energy of conflict to produce positive results.
  • Practice effective methods of intervention and conflict management.

 Elective 4:  Managing Performance Problems
This module provides participants with the skills and tools to prepare for performance-related discussions that increase productivity, collaboration, and achievement of critical goals.
 
Objectives:
  • Identify performance situations in which to take action.
  • Learn key action steps for correcting performance problems.
  • Practice the steps to correcting performance problems. 

Elective 5:  Moral & Ethical Issues in Leadership
This moduleprovides participants with information on the basic theories of ethics as applied to leadership in the healthcare setting.
 
Objectives:
  • To develop an understanding of the basic theories of ethics.
  • To discuss current issues and trends in healthcare in relation to ethics theories.
  • To share ideas and perspectives regarding ethical decision-making using case studies.

To register for any of these modules, login to Netlearning, choose "Enroll in Classes", choose the curriculum topic “New Leader”, then choose "Enroll" next to the session you want to take.
