Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences celebrated it’s first annual Homecoming Event on Saturday, September 16, 2006. The day began with an open house at the College in the afternoon, complete with tours and displays on the various health science programs. College President Mary Grace Simcox greeted alumni and friends. Faculty, staff and students assisted with tours. Nursing Alumni board members mingled with their fellow alumni as they viewed the Nursing Memorabilia Exhibit.

Each decade was represented from the 1930’s to 2004 - from 1938 grad Mary Risk to 2004 grads Deb Johnstin & Lori Gola. Guests enjoyed the light refreshments while watching the College video.

Visitors were eager to see how the College had changed since they graduated. For many, the highlight was touring the College’s Clinical Simulation Laboratory (CSL) and meeting the Sims in person. The CSL opened this past spring and is being used extensively to help educate students. One of the key benefits to the new lab is that it empowers our educators, allowing them to better equip healthcare students with advanced professional skills before they even enter the workplace. Students have the opportunity to practice and refine their clinical skills in a safe environment and ultimately be better healthcare professionals.

After the open house, 140 people attended the Lancaster Barnstormers vs. the Atlantic City Surf baseball game that evening. The pavilion area was reserved for an all-you-can-eat catered meal. People mingled and reconnected with old friends and made new ones. The Barnstormers won the game, 8-2, and the evening concluded with a beautiful fireworks display.

The weekend’s festivities continued on Sunday, September 17, with the “Pillars of Excellence” reception. The event was held at Lancaster General College, Flory Center, and gave healthcare students the opportunity to meet the donors who have financially contributed to their scholarships. The program began and ended with a social and included scholarship and donor acknowledgement, tours of the building and an unveiling of a special plaque honoring those that have recently established endowed healthcare scholarships. Student speakers were Shirley Beale, a second-year nursing student and Elizabeth Dinich, a second-year radiology student. The students spoke about their decision to become healthcare professionals and the importance of their scholarships. The Pillars of Excellence program concluded a weekend’s worth of homecoming activities for students, alumni, faculty and friends of the College.
