Pillars of Excellence 2006, our annual event honoring donors to the Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences, took place on Sunday, September 17, 2006. The event was held at Lancaster General College, Flory Center, and gave healthcare students the opportunity to meet the donors who have financially contributed to their scholarships. The program began and ended with a social and included scholarship and donor acknowledgement, tours of the building and an unveiling of a special plaque honoring those that have recently established endowed healthcare scholarships. Student speakers were Shirley Beale, a second-year nursing student and Elizabeth Dinich, a second-year radiology student. The students spoke about their decision to become healthcare professionals and the importance of their scholarships. The Pillars of Excellence program concluded a weekend’s worth of homecoming activities for students, alumni, faculty and friends of the College.

Cooper Nursing Scholarship which was established in 2005 as an endowed fund to provide an annual award to a student pursing the study of nursing at Lancaster General College. Dr. Cooper was instrumental in bringing clinical nuclear medicine education to Lancaster General Hospital and also was an educator at Lancaster General. He was on staff at Lancaster General Hospital and taught at area colleges for many years until his retirement. Through the establishment of this scholarship Dr. Cooper hopes more students will be encouraged to enter the field of nursing and ultimately help to eliminate the shortage our country is facing for qualified nurses.
