Clinical Simulation LaboratoryThe Clinical Simulation Laboratory (CSL) is a state-of-the-art learning space designed to enhance and reinforce the classroom didactics to allow for additional clinical instruction. The CSL, while not taking away from practice students currently receive, increases access and experiential classroom learning opportunities for more students. It is an environment where students can learn safely without fear of injury or harm to patients, reinforce student confidence and team building and enhance learning and comprehension, thereby contributing to the reduction of medical errors and increased patient safety.

The CSL consists of three full-body simulators, two lab spaces with integrated digital video cameras and microphones, a 48-seat classroom adjacent to the lab spaces and separated by one-way glass for unobtrusive observation and a sophisticated control room. Two adult simulators and one baby simulator provide an excellent platform for teaching students about complex clinical situations using lifelike examples. The simulated clinical experiences can be digitally recorded, archived, and made accessible to students and faculty via the Internet, allowing for clinical skills performance evaluation and training. In addition to the clinical experiences the College's students currently receive at Lancaster General Hospital and surrounding clinical locations, the CSL provides a simulation-based learning environment that will more thoroughly develop their critical thinking skills.

The Facility. The Clinical Simulation Laboratory contains two large lab spaces, a state-of-the-art control room separated from the labs by one-way glass, and a large classroom that can accommodate 48 students which sits adjacent to the lab space.

The Simulators. The Clinical Simulation Laboratory includes three full-body simulated patients provided by METI: the adult Human Patient Simulator, the adult Emergency Care Simulator, and the BabySim.

The Simulation Experience. The Lab provides a flexible experience with pre-packaged scenarios and patients, as well as the ability to develop new scenarios and patients. Digital AV equipment provides the ability to record and assess each session. Policies and Guidelines for using the Lab are critical to a successful experience.

Training. Proper training in the use of the CSL simulators, software, equipment and scenarios is the only way to ensure a successful simulation experience.

Scheduling. Because the Clinical Simulation Lab is used by a variety of different organizations, in addition to classes at the College, it is important to schedule lab and training time in advance.

Outreach. The Clinical Simulation Lab has involved the strong support of the community since its inception. A variety of organizations are using the Lab, with more planned for the future. Funding for the lab has been generous, with more need in the future to support planned lab expansions. Press coverage of our state-of-the-art facility has been extensive.

Learning Materials. The Clinical Simulation Library provides materials including sample lesson plans, instructor guides, and learner guides, for the use of our clients. These materials are only available if you are connected to the Lancaster General Intranet.
