Aspiring Leader Certificate Program
 
Purpose:
We are fortunate that our health system offers a myriad of career opportunities to those who have the propensity to lead. As a leader within the Lancaster General (LG) health system you may have already identified future leadership talent within your area of supervision. The Aspiring Leader Certificate Program creates a system wide educational approach for our future leadership talent who want to explore the management role. We invite you to refer your potential leaders to participate.
 
Aspiring Leader Graduates, June 2008
 
Description of Program:
Using a cohort model and limited to 10 participants, this nine week program will offer coursework in at least one of each of the program’s five fields of management, a career track shadowing experience and a culminating project.
 
These include:
  • Management Operations
  • Organization Behavior
  • Financial Management
  • Information Systems Management
  • Communication in Business
Educational Outcomes:
Demonstrate an understanding of the variety of leadership roles within a healthcare system.
 
Certificate Requirements
To earn the Certificate, participants need to meet the following requirements
  • Must attend all six courses
  • Participate in a career track shadowing experience
  • Prepare a culminating project.
Registration Information
Registration is limited to a cohort of 10 participants.  The composition of the cohort will represent a cross-section of our organization.  Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Registrants must ensure that they can attend the entire program with supervisor approval.  Registration deadline is September 19 or until a cohort of 10 registrants is formed.  To register complete the Registration Form and forward to Catherine Stover. Registration for this program is not available through Netlearning.
 
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
 
Aspiring to Leadership (A Book Discussion Group) 
What really defines leadership? Our concepts of leadership are usually based on our unique personal experiences, and it is clear that a leadership style that works in one situation can be a recipe for disaster in another. In leadership, one size does not fit all. Using the text, The Five Commitments of a Leader by Mark Leheney, the author asserts that a more revealing way to examine leadership is through the commitments a leader makes (or fails to make). Group discussion will focus on the five commitments a leader must make to be effective;
 
Educational Outcomes:
  • Identify each of the five commitments.
  • Define your personal concept of leadership.

COURSE
 
Healthcare Delivery System
Provides an overview of the American healthcare system and the major stakeholders involved. Discussion focuses on the changing delivery systems and the forces driving the changes.
 
Educational Outcomes:
  • Explain the roles of the four major players in the current health care delivery system.
  • Describe LG’s unique role in the marketplace.

COURSE
 
Leadership Strategies for Effective Teambuilding
Explores strategies for getting work done through others, managing and measuring work, motivating others and thinking creatively--all essentials in building an effective team.
 
Educational Outcomes:
  • Differentiate between moving from a strong individual contributor role to a leadership role that requires accomplishing tasks, creating processes and procedures, and sustaining coordinated efforts within or outside of unit/departmental boundaries.
  • Give examples on how to create an environment that invites input from each contributor and promotes shared ownership and visibility.

COURSE
 
Leadership Strategies for Managing Conflict 
Identifies the negative impact of conflict on production and workflow.  Presents strategies to reduce and manage conflict in the workplace. 
 
Educational Outcomes
  • Learn conflict resolution strategies to promote understanding and communication skills within your team.
  • Discuss how to handle disputes equitably and build consensus and cooperation.
Facilitator: Gail Cleffi, Manager, Laboratory Operations.
 
COURSE
 
Managerial Finance for Health Care Leaders
Defines the basic vocabulary and financial concepts used in health care. Explains how to interpret financial statements.
 
Educational Outcomes
  • Identify the basic vocabulary used within the financial management arena.
  • Interpret a basic operations budget for a selected department, facility, or program.

COURSE
 
Desktop Application for Aspiring Leaders
Describes the latest software available to assist managers in accomplishing the full spectrum of management functions.
 
Educational Outcomes
  • Demonstrate and differentiate how frequently used business application programs like Basics of Windows XP, Systematic file management, browser basics, E-mail basics and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are utilized within the management function.

COURSE
 
Speaking and Writing to Influence Others
Introduces the fundamentals of both written and spoken communication. This course prepares individuals for the communication demands of the business workplace.
 
Educational Outcomes
  • Organize thoughts with a focus on addressing the needs of listeners and achieving objectives.
  • Encourage desired actions by delivering messages clearly and concisely in both the spoken and written format.
  • Handle resistance by responding to listeners’ ideas, opinions, and concerns.
