Requirements for Associate Degree and Diploma Programs

Students applying for admission to the Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences must meet the following requirements.

  • General scholarship as evidenced by the secondary school record. All applicants must have graduated from an approved secondary school association, have received a diploma from an accredited home school association, or have met the requirements for the GED. High school-level courses must include a minimum of 16 units with four units English, one unit biology, one unit science with lab and two units of algebra. Post-secondary college-level equivalents will be considered to fulfill the high school requirements.
  • Satisfactory achievement on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) administered by the College Entrance Examination Board or the American College Testing Assessment Program (ACT) administered by the American College Testing Program. These exams are not required if more than two (2) years have elapsed since either graduation or earning of the GED. Arrangements for taking the SAT or ACT examinations are made through the secondary school guidance office or by writing directly to the respective test organization.
  • Preferred applicants will have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or greater and SAT combined reading and math scores of 1000 or greater.
  • Three recommendations from teachers, guidance counselors, college advisors, professors, employers or community/organization leaders.
  • Additional factors considered in the competitive admission process include rank in class, academic performance in secondary or college-level math and science courses, community service, healthcare-related service and employment history.
  • Those students who have college credits and wish to pursue an associate in applied science degree will be reviewed to determine which course(s) will be transferred into the College to meet the requirements of the associate degree program.

Requirements for International Students

Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences is not approved to issue documentation to admit international students. Applicants who are not United States citizens must show proof of permanent resident visa status.

An individual educated in another country may be admitted if, in addition to satisfying the general admission requirements, he/she demonstrates proficiency in English, shown by earning a minimum score of 550, or computerized score of 213, in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey. Students from English-speaking countries may choose to take the SAT or ACT as an option to the TOEFL exam.

An evaluation of foreign transcripts by the World Education Service (W.E.S.) or other approved agency is required.

Additional Program-Specific Admissions Requirements

Each program may have admission criteria over and above the general admission criteria above. These requirements are described below. You may also want to refer to the individual program pages, available from our Academics page or to the College Catalog (links to both are on the left side of this page).

Cardiovascular Invasive Specialty
All applicants for the two-year associate degree program must meet the general admission requirements. Applicants to the 11-month diploma program must have earned an associate's or bachelor's degree, or have completed a two-year post-secondary allied health program. Prior to entering the diploma program, the following college-level courses must be completed with a grade of C or better: human anatomy and physiology I & II.

Clinical Laboratory Science
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed three years of study in an accredited college prior to entering the clinical year at LGCNHS. Candidates who have already received a baccalaureate degree may also be eligible for entry into the program. The following college-level courses must be included as minimum requirements for admission: 16 semester hours in chemistry with organic and/or biochemistry included; 16 semester hours in biology with microbiology, immunology, and genetics and/or molecular biology included; and at least one course in mathematics. Biochemistry is strongly recommended. Statistics, instrumentation, physiology, computer science and management courses are other desirable electives.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Applicants for the two-year associate degree program must meet the general admission requirements. Individuals who have completed a two-year post-secondary allied health program, or have earned an associate degree or higher, are eligible to complete the diagnostic medical sonography diploma curriculum.  Individuals entering the diploma track will start in the Spring Semester of the first year, beginning in January.  Diploma candidates must complete the following college-level courses with a grade of "C" or better: English composition, physics, human anatomy and physiology I & II, medical terminology, and methods of patient care. Certain courses may be offered as co-requisites during the Spring semester.  

Nuclear Medicine Technology
Students enrolled in the Nuclear Medicine Technology program at Harrisburg Area Community College, Millersville University of Pennsylvania or York College of Pennsylvania have the first opportunity to enroll in the program. Other applicants must have earned an associate's or bachelor's degree, or have completed a two-year post-secondary allied health program. Prior to entering the program, all applicants must have completed college-level prerequisite courses in human anatomy and physiology I and II, chemistry, physics, mathematics (at least college algebra), English composition and speech.

Nursing - Evening/Weekend Program
Applicants for the evening/weekend program must complete prerequisite college courses in human anatomy & physiology I and II prior to entering NUR 101.
 
Nursing - Licensed Practical Nurse Advanced Placement Program
Licensed Practical Nurses have the opportunity for advanced placement. Applicants applying for admission to the LPN-to-RN program must meet the following requirements:
  • Graduation from a National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) accredited practical nurse or vocational nurse program. Provisions exist for applicants who are graduated from non-NLNAC accredited programs based upon achievement tests.
  • Current valid license to practice practical nursing (LPN).
  • Documented proof of at least 1,000 working hours as an LPN within the last two (2) years prior to beginning NUR 201.
  • Meet all the requirements for general admission to the College.
  • Completion human anatomy and physiology I & II , clinical mathematics for the health sciences (MAT 150), and nine (9) additional general education course credits with a grade of C or better and a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or greater.

Students accepted into this track must be evaluated for placement in the nursing program.  Successful completion of the six-week LPN Transition assessment module exempts students from NUR 101, NUR 102, NUR 111, and NUR 112.

Radiography
Radiography applicants must meet the general admission requirements.

Surgical Technology
Applicants for the associate's degree program must meet the general admission requirements.  Applicants who have earned an associate's or bachelor's degree, or have completed a two-year secondary allied health program, are eligible for the diploma program. Prior to entering the diploma program, the following college level courses must be completed with a grade of C or better: human anatomy & physiology I & II.
